"Takumi", it is called for carpenters in Japanese, who have very high skilled craftsmen (Master Carpenter).
Their specialty is constructing/repairing of National Treasures such as Japanese Shrines, Temples.
Those historic facilities have several hundred years of history, and some of them were built more than thousand years ago, and they also work for creating Authentic Japanese rooms "Washitsu" and "Chashitsu".
However, it is not possible to do constructing or repairing work for shrines and temples with the knowledge and skills of ordinary carpenters.
Many places in Japan, especially in Kyoto Prefecture, we can see a lot of historic architecture, those were constructed at least several hundred years ago, but they were built without using nails, pins and bolts.
Japan is a well known country that is frequently subject to heavy earthquakes.
However, despite this harsh natural environment, why are those historic buildings still alive with good conditions even though those were built without using metal parts as for reinforcement?
This is because of Takumi craftsmen's amazing work, they have done it completely from ancient times..
While expressways and buildings made of concrete collapsed, historic buildings made entirely of wood using traditional construction techniques spared serious damage from the heavy earthquakes.
Their architectural knowledge and craftsman spirits passed over from ancient times to present day.
However, it’s so difficult to become a "Takumi", it takes at least 15 years of training to acquire the skills of a master craftsman to be called Takumi.
We work to build Washitsu only with Takumi craftsmen, not with ordinally carpenters.
Of course, there are many highly skilled carpenters in each country, but if they come to create a traditional Japanese style room, it seems that process will be different.
With the above mentioned reasons, Takumi craftsmen have enough knowledge to create high quality and durable Washitsu, only Takumi knows what is a real traditional Washitsu and also knows how to create it perfectly.
